Corin Dann hosted Breakfast alongside Pippa this morning on One. Not a bad host, would be good to see him to do it more regularly.

TVNZ's morning show Breakfast has apologised for falling victim to an on-air hoax, interviewing a person who claimed to be a campaigner for commercial whaling.

http://www.mediaspy....o-whaling-hoax/

EDIT: Video.

EDIT 2: Predictably, it has now been taken down by TVNZ.

TVNZ has now uploaded a clip of the segment; at the bottom of the article.

Incidentally, the point that "Jay Pryor" makes is actually that I used in a debate on commercial whaling a couple of months ago, and it could actually be construed as reasonable. Specifically, that establishing a market could actually lead to fewer whales being hunted, because the current situation is that countries like Japan essentially hunt far more whales than there's actually demand for.

While demand for whales in Japan has declined, the number of whales being hunted as increased. So the argument goes that if you establish a (limited) market system, the whale catch will better reflect those market pressures.

It looks like there could be a major shake-up of public broadcasting in NZ - 3 News - Govt proposes Radio NZ, TVNZ merger

This could be a great move if it establishes one strong national broadcaster, along similar lines to the ABC, which is adequately resourced and can save resources by sharing content across multiple platforms.

On the other hand, it would be disastrous if this was just being done to allow the privatisation of TV One and TV2 with no added funds provided for public broadcasting. RNZ is already stretched as is and a requirement for its budget to be spend on TV as well would seriously compromise its quality, worsening further the appalling state of public broadcasting in NZ.
