Naomi tonight:

"It's Australia's very own Hallow Shal".

She laughed and corrected herself after the break.

Naomi's exclusive may never find the airwaves. It will be a ratings winner on Monday if it does.

Here is the article.

Police may block TV show chat
August 1, 2004

NEW South Wales Police may take legal action to stop a TV interview with Sydney security guard Karen Brown going to air as she still has not spoken to them about shooting dead a man who robbed and bashed her.

Ms Brown has not been interviewed by police because her lawyer told officers she had been in no mental or physical condition to speak to them since the incident on Monday, July 26...

...continued...

...Ms Brown has reportedly been paid up to $100,000 for a television interview with Channel 7's Today Tonight program.

But Liverpool detectives may take legal action tomorrow to prevent the piece going to air.

"I'll be taking legal advice on Monday to prevent the program going to air as there may be several reasons we need to do that," Superintendent Terry Jacobsen told the Sun-Herald newspaper.

"While police have endeavoured to apply the orderly principles of law (in this case), we may be no better off than if we had taken (Ms Brown) to hospital on the afternoon it happened and arrested her in the foyer."

They're really plugging the story in a lot of commercial breaks - but I don't think it will be going to air tonight.

It's just been announced the police will allow TT to screen the interview.

Just on Today Tonight - it will not be shown during the 2 weeks of the Olympic Games.

What a disgrace Naomi Robson and her band of cretins were last night. The entire shabby and grubby episode had as much dignity as a rabid rat. If they really cared about this woman, they would not have paid her, they would not have broadcast the interview and they would not have prejudiced any possible trial. Naomi and your Today Tonight monsters, you presented and presided over a programme that killed journalism on Australian TV.

You know, I think to be fair, its not just Today Tonight that do it, ACA have done it in the past too. I didn't personally watch it last night, I was forced to watch Neighbours, but it's nothing new that a controversial story has been shown by a current affairs type program.

Being a little bit precious and over the top for sure. Cheque book journalism isn't just the domain of TT and has been done by just about every commercial current affair program ever produced. Where is yourself righteous indignation and the sounding of the death knell of journalism when Ray paid a crim but got away with it when another journo took the fall (and now living in luxury in Queensland for doing it)?

If you're going to so vehemently and spitefully criticise then do it fairly and lash out against all perpertrators and not just what happens to be your ideological hate or rival network.
All content is from the author's twisted mind and does reflect his bent personality. He is seeking professional help.

In oneplanetmikey's defense, he has every right to highlight TT in this case. Mikey was not making a general comment about tabloid current affairs, but highlighted the spectacularly sickening Today Tonight broadcast that aired on Monday night.

I too was deeply, deeply saddened by the emotional and physical state of this woman. She was clearly in absolutely no coherent state of mind to be interviewed - by either TT or the police - or to accept the offer/money in the first place.

It was a low point in a brand of journalism that rarely has any highs. I think even the most avid viewers of these programs would have rightly felt shocked to the core whilst watching this sad event.

I don't work for a television network, so get that straight. I am critical off all the self-righteous evil bastards who place people in the electronic pillory. Not enough people recognise that television has an enormous effect on reputation. May I remind you of the dodgy video repair technician who was the victim of a Jane Hansen report on A Current Affair back in the 90's. The day after he was fitted up and humiliated on national television, the poor old bugger hanged himself. Hansen and ACA did not kill him, and I am sure that was not their intention. However, a weakened member of society who came from a culture with significant "shame issues" DID kill himself after a Current Affair shamed him.
Naomi, Ray, and all the self-appointed arbiters of morality deserve to rot. Nothing more, nothing less.

Agreed. Speaking specifically about TT last night, Naomi has all the warmth and sincerity of a nazi stormtrooper. She was appalling. That poor woman she interviewed was clearly emotionally unstable and it was shocking tv. And i'm not singling seven out here - if TT hadn't done it, ray would have.

But Naomi is a talentless insincere talking head. She is not a qualified journo and has succeeded in the role not because of her talent but despite it. She can read an autocue, but as was evidenced last night, she cannot interview (which is why Craig Macpherson uses her for this purpose so little.)

She's good looking and that's about it. What a pathetic episode. Hopefully the powers at seven will look at last nights interview and realise how bad she is.

from The Age:

George Negus on ACA and TT.

"They've stopped defining current affairs as answering the question, 'Why?' " he says. "That's what it's all about. That's what people want to know. I think they've missed the purpose of the exercise of what they're meant to be doing, which is why they end up wallowing in this morass of consumer stuff, diet plans and celebs.

"They've taken their eye off the current affairs ball so often and for so long that they no longer have the working definition of current affairs that they used to. They can't work out why they're chasing each other down dark alleys."

Initially I thought good on TT and Naomi. Here could be a way of highlighting the double standard of the NSW police force being that if it was one of their own there would have been the usual protective support from the commissioner down. If their were charges it would be something a whole lot less than murder plus the moral, legal and financial support from the police union. A worthwhile point being made but alas!

Sadly there is no such beast as a truly current affairs show any more. Even the ABC, the doyen of currents afairs, has had their wings clipped. Current affair shows used to cover international, national and local issues. News behind the news. Things that affected us all from macro to micro, digging up the truth and yes did involve a lot of politics! But now are we so immature and blind that we just accept all the shit being fed to us? Have we got to be protected from the big issues? I think we all are partially to blame for current affair shows slipping into the gutter, not just the commercial networks greedy for self promotion, ratings and thus bigger profits. Use the off switch and tell them why. Nothing would piss them off more!

Regarding George Negus and his comments, yes he used to be a pioneer in current affairs but that was a long time ago and he along with Willesse, Wendt and co eventually sold their souls.

I don't understand why people are saying the story on TT was sickening.

Karen was quite obviously in alot of post traumatic stress. Having said that she chose to do the interview.

For those of you who do not know, channel Seven offered $100 000 for the interview, most likely at the request of her lawyers; who are trying to establish exactly the point which was made last night. That is that she has been affected by the incident.

With channel seven's offer of $100 000 being made, Channel 9 and ACA made a counter offer of $130 000!

Karen Brown declined this offer because she wanted to speak with Naomi, and only Naomi.

This puts aside claims of money offers being Karen's motive, puts aside claims Channel 7's greed... This lady simply wanted to set the record straight.

I thought Naomi did great, considering the circumstances.

what a stupid argument - and prove it.

and if you can, it doesn't mean a thing. both TT and ACA are an embarrassing joke.

just because ACA offered money doesn't make it right. if she wanted to talk to Naomi so badly - one can only wonder why - then she should have done it for free.

and the argument put by Meakin "we don't pay criminals" is crap . . . she shot someone dead Petey boy. . . there was a pretty good chance charges would follow. Maybe the prudent thing to would be to wait until after she was cleared, if that happens, then pay here. Don't try to get off on a technicality . . . use some common sense and don't treat us all like your average TT or ACA viewer.

well, although crikey may not be the most reliable source, you can find it all on their website.

Every media organisation was out to get the exclusive interview. Channel 7 and New Ltd got them, so Fairfax and Channel 9 jumped on the "that is sickening" bandwagon.

Obviously Andrew you do not understand the vagaries of psychiatric illness, or you simply haven't been diagnosed yet. Any person with Post Traumatic Stress disorder or anythinglike that is not capable of making sound, reasonable judgements. The interview was sickening because Today Tonight chose to take advantage of a distressed woman for ratings. Absolutely nothing was gained from it. It made Naomi look like the complete disaster she is, it predjudiced any possible trial, and now the money is frozen. If it remains frozen it will revert to the state government of NSW. The seven network, in a chase for ratings have now lost 100K. If I did that, my boss would kick my arse all the way to centrelink.

The lady, who suffered trauma in the past, was stressed. Is that better..?
