I think it may have been put off by the whole Peter Lloyd business, but I've not heard anything.

I would take a wild guess, and say that another presenter will be doing Lateline Friday.

I'd say Leigh will do it along with her other shifts in the week!

Has a (new) male co-anchor been announced yet?
It's slated to start in September... I'd say perhaps closer to the footy finals at the end of the month, maybe the Monday immediately after.
I wonder whether it will go remain on air all year, or take a hiatus like much of the ABC's TV news.

Veteran journalist Barrie Cassidy will take on an ABC co-host role made vacant by the impending trial of Peter Lloyd in Singapore.
Cassidy will co-host the forthcoming Breakfast programme on ABC2 with Virginia Trioli from October. He will remain until the network appoints a new host.
Breakfast will present live and broadcast breaking news from the ABC's extensive network of television, radio and online journalists, including footage of live radio interviews with politicians and breaking international news.
It will air from 6 - 10am daily in competition with Sunrise, Today, Sky News and radio.
"The program is a very important step in the development of the 24-hour news centre, and I am happy to step in and help," Cassidy said.
The program is part of a major move by the broadcaster to maximise its vast news networks in television, radio and online.
Cassidy already works on two Sunday programs: Insiders and Offsiders.

So much for live - up to date - news then for a significant part of the country

There isn't that much breaking news during the morning so I don't really see the need for live up to date news for the minority of the country that won't see Breakfast live.
Anyway i think we are used to delayed TV...if you want live news you put SNA on (for those with Fox).

No breaking news at breakfast? Do you actually think about things before you type them?
The ABC supposedly prides itself with providing up to date news and being a source of world news that no one else provides - you would have thought that being live would be a priority.
And just because "we're used to delayed TV" doesn't make it right - in the 1960's people were used to not seeing overseas news until several days after it happened because the film had to be shipped in - by your arguement people were "used to it" so why bother with those expensive satellite thingies?

How often do you see breaking news on Sunrise or Today?
Once a week tops.

Once a week tops.
That says more about Sunrise and Today than it does about breaking news.
There are plenty of things happening overseas - presumably the ABC breakfast news will also have a global focus.
And it's not just the early mornings.... if the program ends at 0900 AEST that means it's on the air until 0900 WST (1100 AEST) there can be plenty of breaking news in the first 2 hours of the working day in the East that will have been completely missed by so called breakfast "news" in the west

Take a look at ABC Radio and Fairfax Radio (if its available in your respective markets). They are constantly updating their news and providing the freshes angle. Breakfast News will be similar (it would appear).
