What about just switching The Simpsons & Ten News At Five:

5.00 The Simpsons
5.30 Ten News At Five

Why can't Ten try this? With increased competition from cable tv and the internet... it's time that they tried something bold again. TVQ-0/10 Brisbane used to compete with BTQ-7 and QTQ-9 at 6pm during the 1970's, 80's and early 90's and was somewhat successful. I understand ADS/SAS-10 Adelaide also competed with the other networks at 6pm as well.. so it's not really a new idea.

In Melbourne we've had all 3 commercial news bulletins at 6pm at various times, eg. 1987 where Seven and Ten had one-hour news, and Nine had the news and ACA. Then again in 1989. The problem is when you have a three-way contest, not only does it deprive viewers of choice (as ABC and SBS only has niche programming at that time), but you only really end up with one or two solid performers and one struggler.

What's the chances that Nine could be the struggler in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in a three-cornered contest? Nine and Seven are currently too strong at 6pm in Adelaide and Brisbane though. Things are different these days, with more competition from cable and the internet.

Yes they would have to be promoted as different. I'd also maybe just get Mal solo at 6pm and call it Ten Nightly News Melbourne or something to make it feel more of a traditional newscast and more separate than 5pm but make sure you make it VERY clear its still local news.

No "Nightly" News bulletins...

TEN NEWS as a brand on it's own would be better....

Would be slaughtered by Seven and Nine and then there would be no point in having the extension.

Oh and Mal Walden - I don't think he'd care either way. He is not far off retirement anyway. I think his contract expires at the end of this year or next year.

Don't be surprised if Mal Walden does not renew his contract at the end of its tenure.........
He has had several health issues this year....and last...so I reckon the line "I want to spend more time with my family"
will be trotted out

Even though Nine is down, I'm not sure Ten is strong enough to mount an ongoing challenge to Nine in Sydney and Melbourne.

In Perth, that's another story

Neighbours would bomb at 6 against Seven and Nine News. It is very hard to place anything else in this time when going
up against these two bulletins.......

Yes I believe Mal Walden has plenty of years left in him yet. He won't be going anywhere.

It's still ten news at 5 really, just at 5:30, it's the fifth hour.. Good marketing technique to get people to turn over early to. I think they should move the bold to 5, the viewers would soon follow with Judge Judy at 4:30, I loved that show. We never get it on SC.

News at 5 would only be News at 5 if it were at 5. if it's 5:30, its News at 5:30

17th to be pedantic but nonetheless you've made that point, so can we move on to discussion about Ten News at 6, not whether 5:30 is actually 5:00? crazy.gif

It says its going to save them 6 million a year on simpsons rpts at 6:00. But wouldn't it cost them more to produce an extra 1/2 hr news service?
