That's how they cover local stories, and stay within the law, now.

After Prime axed a bunch of its local bulletins in about 2001, if my memory serves, ACMA ran an investigation into local news services and whether regional areas were getting a decent level of local news coverage. As a result of that investigation, they put in a minimum requirement for regional stations to have X amount of locally produced content - it was a points system where you got X amount for entertainment programming, and then twice that for any local news.

Of course it didn't prompt Prime or Southern Cross to reinstate their local news, rather they just started producing the sort of 2-minute bulletins you're talking about - essentially just a presenter in Canberra reading the headlines from the local paper with a short weather forecast at the end. If you put those to air a few times a day then the quota is filled pretty easily.

A licence condition requires broadcasters in these areas to achieve a minimum score for local or licence area content of 90 points per week and a minimum of 720 points over a six-week timing period. Broadcasters must broadcast in each of their local areas sufficient ‘material of local significance’ to accumulate the number of points required to meet the quotas. Broadcasters report their compliance figures to ACMA on a six-monthly basis.

WIN News have been running updates all through the night due to the fires that are currently threatening and engulfing Rockhampton's outter northern suburbs, and they end the updates "join us tomorrow at 6 for all the details," does this mean that WIN News will have a special edition tomorrow night?

Well usually if any events happen over the weekend, they don't show them until the following Monday, and WIN News doesn't usually broadcast updates on the weekend either. Didn't WIN do a special bulletin on a weekend for fires that were threatening Canberra a few years back?

WIN News Canberra did broadcast on weekends during the 2003 fires. By the way Smacca... "tomorrow" (at the time of posting/airing) is Sunday 6pm. So, it could well be that WIN News is airing a special bulletin. If so, caps and/or videos would be appreciated.

Ahh of course, it's the weekend. I take back what I said.

The only other one I remember is the online bulletin WIN posted for people in the vicinity of the Victorian Bushfires at the start of this year.

WIN News here in Queensland is now using the cover-ups for the file tapes that are still in 4:3. Like the Nine News ones, they have the scrolling small WIN News text with a larger scrolling WIN News text in the background, and also an animated background.

Nice. I'm suprised - Aussie networks hardly use this. I guess it's a little too late with digital penetration increasing, but good to see WIN design one that's good.
