Just shows what happens when ignore your professionally designed brief

Exactly! I think they just love dreaming up crappy graphics and updating whatever they like. Similar to the weird custom "ABC News" images they sometimes use on ABC News NSW on the Plasma for no apparent reason - what was wrong with the original one?

Remember that much ABC News content is rebroadcast on the Australia Network, which, if I remember correctly, is broadcast in a letterboxed 14:9 ratio. Therefore, they cannot simply design all of their programmes for 16:9.

Maybe with an approaching relaunch of the Australia Network (yet again, this is months behind schedule!), they could switch it over to 16:9. However, many viewers of the service watch it through local rebroadcasts and these are not necessarily widescreen.

The Australian:

THE ABC must acknowledge the budgetary costs of running its 24-hour news network and fund it properly if high standards of journalism are to be maintained, the broadcaster's most senior foreign correspondent has warned.
Peter Cave, who retired as foreign affairs editor last week after a 40-year career, said he supported News 24 but wanted ABC management to fund it properly instead of allowing it to drain resources from across the news department. He said a meeting with managing director Mark Scott was being planned.

At the end of Al Jazeera just simulcast was a new ident with something like, 'Viewers are advised that the broadcast of our partner Al Jazeera is now finished'.

It seems that since the start of this month News 24 has been showing two hours of BBC World News content on week nights, whereas previously it only showed one. According to the ABC online guide, the overnight schedule is now:

0000 - ABC News
0020 - Lateline
0100 - Al Jazeera Newshour
0200 - BBC News The Hub
0325 - 7.30
0400 - Al Jazeera Newshour
0500 - BBC World News
0530 - Newsline

Sorry I'm confused. News24 has always aired two half hour bulletins of BBC News overnight, totallying only one hour...
Airing at different times due to daylight savings and with the introduction of Al Jazeera broadcasts...

The difference is that, instead of airing two half-hour BBC bulletins, according to the guide they are now airing the entire 90 minutes of The Hub and another half-hour bulletin later, totalling two hours.

Ooo. I shall check it out at 1PM to see if they have fixed the jolty "ABC NEWS" slide at the end of the images.

Ahh, now I see. I'd rather see some different BBC World News bulletins other than 3 editions back to back to back of the Hub.

Crikey:

The ABC plans to revamp its campaign coverage at next year’s federal election following heavy criticism of the media’s performance during the 2010 campaign. On the menu is greater policy scrutiny, a beefed-up online offering and more opportunities for voters to set the agenda rather than politicians or journalists.

The top-of-the-hour countdown/ident has again been updated by the ABC. Just saw the 30-second version (I think); truly awful.

There's also an awesome promo celebrating 2 years of ABC24 on rotation, in case it hasn't been mentioned here. Cycles through the major stories of the past 24 months. Quite impressive.
