too late for what?

too late in that all the excitement that the promos have generated will have died down.

Also i didn't realise that video was so old. I'd say they will probably launch it sometime this week, considering Julia will most likely call an election this week.

too late in that all the excitement that the promos have generated will have died down.

You have to remember that most of that 'excitement' is coming from people like us who like to follow what is going on in the media. The average Joe sitting at home wouldn't even really know or care that the launch of ABC News 24 is imminent.

The promo loop isn't really about creating excitement rather more of an awareness campaign that could run for months if they really wanted, reserving the channel ready for a launch. People will see it being played on ABC1 & 2 and then perhaps try looking for channel 24 out of curiosity, see the promo loop and think nothing of it again until the hear the channel is active.

I think the one thing we can all just about agree on is that by the end of July the channel should be up and running, the common consensus appears to be ‘mid-July’ and this coming week is the start of mid-July.

Is this actually going to be on digital channel 24, or is it staying on HD 20.

LCN 20 is gone,it is now 24. If you are still seeing 20,then you need to do a rescan.

34%. Minority by a pretty big margin.

Definitely not niche and continuing to grow though.

Still well short of "more than 40%", though. Of course the number of HD households must be even lower than that so it's a moot point.

I thought I heard 39% at least reported somewhere, that's where I got the figure from.

if the Daily Telegraph is saying October

It was not published in yesterday's Daily Telegraph (which I assume the poster who mentioned this here yesterday was refering to the Confidential article about the loop currently airing) that the channel wouldn't actually be launching in October, but rather the channel was due to launch by October. Just to clarify... :)

I'd like to point out that 34% of houses having Foxtel =/= 34% watching Sky on a regular basis.

News Ltd is using Sky as a vehicle to promote its own columnists. And together they are in the midst of a campaign to denigrate the ABC and to attack the ABC's charter because they want to get their grubby hands on the DFAT millions that go with the overseas Australia Channel.

I agree that is News Ltd's grand plan but they couldn't convince a Liberal Govt to give them the Australia Network contract. I think they have even less chance under Labor. For Murdoch and News it is all about getting access to the markets in places like India that have been established by AusNet.

LOL. Well... I thought it was interesting as Holmes would be around the people who would know about the launch - and he is not the type of journalist with a tendency for hyperbole or passing lines.

He isn't around those people actually. Holmes works well away from News. I know he still has regular contact with his old colleagues in News and but they don't know a date either.

Depends on your equipment. In my household I've rescanned all TV’s and set-top boxes, all moved the channel to 24 except an old TEAC box that left the channel on 20 and relabelled it as ABC News 24.

Seriously, Twitter? That's some fine investigative journalism from Amanda Meade.

EDIT: Also, from The Australian's website:

Media Diary | July 12, 2010
THEY wouldn’t, would they? The ABC on Friday tore the hoardings off the ABC News 24 studio at its Sydney headquarters and it’s got a promotional video for its news channel up on YouTube, but there’s still no launch date. Now we hear the 24/7 news channel will launch on ... 24/7 (that is, July 24.)

I've still got LCN 20 as ABC HD ... but then I haven't done a rescan yet. Will do it when I get home.

I personally think a date will not be released and one day one of us will be lucky enough to turn it over and see the channel having begun.

Then it starts ahead and everyone else has to fill in and catch-up.
