Although it's interesting that they're only using half of the ABC News 24 Logo.

I think the graphics will be consistent across ABC1 and News 24 so leaving the '24' part out, is probably because of that.

Has this site been crashing therefore leaving people unable to comment that ABC News 24 will begin transmission at 7:30pm on Thursday the 22nd of July.

For the last 3hours I have been unable to get onto the site, thought it must have been the euphoria surrounding the release date which I first saw on the abc news website. It was billed as Breaking News.

There was also a spot on the 7pm bulletin with shots of how the morning bulletin will go to air.

Apologies for the downtime - it hit just before the announcement was made. :D

TSR's summary of what we've been told:

After weeks of speculation, the ABC has announced that ABC News 24 will launch on-air on Thursday 22 July.

The first programme to air on the high-definition news channel will be an ABC News special at 7:30pm AEST. The broadcaster indicates that the launch programme would aim to showcase the full range of the ABC's news-gathering capabilities, featuring reporting from journalists in Australia and around the world.

From the tiny, tiny bit of the theme music we hear that also sounds pretty good (although of course its a miniscule amount)

Also, if the ABC News title screen that appears at the beginning of the story is what is going to make its way onto the 7pm ABC1 bulletins, then thats a great new look for it too :)

EDIT: Just read the schedule, and that looks really solid too :D

I couldn't make anything from the theme at all. Any idea on what the timeslots are for all there programs?

Yeah, with the theme, I have to admit, I turned it up really really loud (right at the beginning where it cuts away from Ian Henderson) - an act of desperation on my part

So - MATTB - still laughing? Think my post on July 8 was spot on - and the first to have the date accurately!

Ooooh there was just so much rumour and speculation who knows what people knew.

But I really want to know now what the schedule will be for weekends, with all the crew taking up weekends.

Scott Bevan to spearhead late news.

Also the times of the day for all these programs, the drum sounds like it could be really good.

I'd also really like to know the duration of each program - especially the evening bulletin.

If this channel is live across Australia, won't that mean that in WA the "9pm" evening bulletin will be competing with the ABC1's own 7pm one?

Wouldn't it just be half an hour?

I am going to have to stop reading through here, it's making me come over all talkback radio.

Was that regarding the evening bulletin?

Thats what I thought, except the other programs kind of imply rolling news blocks - "Afternoon Live," "Mornings" etc - and I was wondering about whether the evening one would take this form as well

That looks like a really solid lineup. The Drum looks especially promising. It's great that they seem to be emphasising in-depth analysis and up-to-the-minute news, which is what Sky News is sorely lacking. Good news for FTA and Subscription television.

Come on, we're not quite at the stage of accusing Nine's graphics department of impeding attempts to quit smoking, as one talkback caller claimed back in '06. :D

Looking at the line-up and the short video, the presentation already craps all over Sky News. The sliding elements have been implemented really well! I'll be making sure that i'll be free on Thursday evening. Would this mean that the channel will launch at 5:30pm in Perth?

Speaking of graphics, I'm expecting a lot from this channel. As the ABCTV Blog says:

ABC News 24’s launch showcases the philosophy of the channel – excellent journalism, stunning visual design and multiplatform delivery of news as it happens.

Also, what's the story behind this image from The Spy Report? Is it part of the channel's graphics package or is it some kind of mock-up?

From the snippet we saw in the news piece, I like the presentation angle and the dimensional background, looks good!

And from memory, it was featured on The Footy Show as well! I'll just go in the corner and hang my head in shame for admitting that I watch it!

I composed it using images from the ABC press kit accompanying the announcement. The use of blue sliding panes/slats to construct the map is consistent with what we've already seen of News 24's on-air presentation, so such a map may form part of the channel's identification.
