Network Ten is pleased to announce it has commissioned a new Australian drama series – Offspring.

The 13 x 1 hour series is a Southern Star John Edwards production and is produced by Imogen Banks
(Tangle) and John Edwards.

Offspring is a contemporary drama series about 30-something Nina Proudman (Asher Keddie), and her
fabulously messy family, as they navigate the chaos of modern life.

Boasting a stellar Australian cast including Asher Keddie, Don Hany, John Waters, Kat Stewart,
Deb Mailman, Eddie Perfect, Richard Davies and Linda Cropper, production will commence in
Melbourne in May.

Created by Debra Oswald, Offspring has been commissioned on the back of a very well received
telemovie and is the perfect addition to TEN's program schedule for 2010.

"It's a joyous story with a dream team cast. Can't wait to get started," said producer John Edwards.

Imogen Banks (producer) added: "We are thrilled to be making this buoyant, romantic comedy set
on the streets of Fitzroy".

Executive Producer, Drama and Production, Network Ten, Rick Maier said, "Brilliant cast, brilliant script.
It should be a fun shoot".

Offspring will air on TEN in 2010.

that is cutting it fine. with the comm games, 13 episodes would have to start mid-August if they want to finish by the end of ratings. most other dramas have 6-7 months between start of filming and premier and longer for new shows will this be done in 3 months? even home and away usually has a 5 month gap.

why have they dragged the chain on this?

Surely ten should be looking to launch as many NEW shoes as possible (including imports and new local stuff) out of masterchef lead ins or they will waste the masterchef opportunity again.

dangerous to close out the year with Rush and Offspring....
Looking forward to Oh Six!

There is hardly much room in the schedule. Sunday, Thursday won't be changing until at least late July with House, The Good Wife, Medium, Law and Order SVU all having at least 22 episode seasons to play out ... and that is assuming neither of them go into repeats during easter. Mondays remain constant throughout the year with Good News Week occupying the night. Tuesday and Wednesday are the only two night and they won't be free till at least early June and late April early may at the earliest.

Then they have ...

RUSH
Offspring
Glee
Merlin
Law and Order: CI
Modern Family
The Simpsons (all new)
Talkin' 'bout Your Generation (part 2 of season 2)
Hawke (the telemovie)
Lie to Me
Junior MasterChef
Recruits
Bondi Vet

All of which have potential to rate well ...

Perhaps it will air in double episodes after the commonwealth games.

That would surely be a waste on TEN's part.
I'm certainly looking forward to the premiere 'Offspring' - TEN might not be fantastic at grabbing great numbers to view it's Aussie dramas, but they are certainly of a better quality than Nine's "action, sex and looks" attempts. Viewers have shown that they clearly want more relationship-based series (as seen with huge ratings for 'PTTR') - good on TEN for giving it a go.

agreed, but I am looking forward to is so much that i want it to have every chance to succeed. I know they will publicise the hell out of it during the games, but slotting it in that back end of tens year (which usually sucks big time) is not giving it much of a chance.....

How so? Who knows, 2010 might be the year TEN finally shows a stronger back-quarter, especially with the games leading into it. Apart from launching it off the back of 'MasterChef' (which didn't help 'Rush' all that much last season), the 'Comm Games' are the best possible chance TEN has of launching a fresh new series, especially one that is harder to sell.

I like to see more Aussie drama but am not sure this sounds like a show that would be on Ten.

I tend to agree. Plus John Edwards doesn't really have a great track record, ratings-wise, on commercial television. Yes I know "Secret Life" did well at first but we shouldn't pretend that "Rush" has been successful.

Well they need the Aussie drama, they can't continuously rely on Neighbours just for the quota forever. If you have Aussie drama to fill your quota then you'd at least like the drama in question to rate well!

I don't think Jbar is questioning the fact that ten shouldn't be producing more australian drama just the fact that it might not exactly be a ten type of show. But I think its more the direction that ten are heading in.

Come on guys, it's a "contemporary drama" so we know it's going to be all cinematic and pretentious like we're used to on Ten.

Yeah, I want Ten to be producing more scripted Aussie drama and comedy but just seeing how they mostly only value certain demographics, I think this show may not deliver enough viewers in those demographics, so it will struggle. Ten screened a critically acclaimed series called 'The Surgeon' a few years back that had some very good drama but viewers did not support it. I think it only attracted older viewers and did particularly badly in the younger demographics. It didn't get a second series.

That's why its set in "funky" Fitzroy, which I daresay is a turn-off for at least 80% of the population.

Hope they advertise the whole family aspect to it, would probably have the same style of appeal as Rafters/Modern Family if its about her and her 'fabulously messy family', so with the right promotion this could do really well. Great to see Aussie drama other than Cops and Rescue shows
