A dedicated thread for discussion of the football ratings for the major codes.

Feel free to compare, debate and theorise!

Please note this is a trial (as opposed to having discussion in daily threads over the weekend) and your input/thoughts are welcomed.

The World Cup being a special event will likely have its own thread should the amount of discussion warrant it.

Just looking at Friday's ratings for the various football games:

13 Nine’s Live Friday Night Football Nine 690,000 394,000 *** 296,000 *** ***
21 Seven’s Afl: Rnd 13: Hawthorn Vs Essendon Seven 580,000 10,000 370,000 6,000 105,000 90,000
29 Nine’s Friday Night Football Nine 389,000 243,000 *** 146,000 *** ***

Now, I know the AFL went from 8:30 to 11:30, and to my knowledge the first NRL game was 7:30 to 9:30, and the second was 9:30 to 11:30.

Live NRL beats AFL as a Metro total, and more people in Sydney watch that NRL game than Melbourne watch the AFL game. Yet the AFL game comfortably outrates the delayed NRL game, both as a Metro total and Melbourne outrates both Sydney and Brisbane, and is only 19k short of the combined total.

How much of a delay is the second NRL game shown on?

Both games start at 7.30pm, so the second game is delayed two hours. But one game goes live into Brisbane and the other live into Sydney, then they switch at 9.30pm.

Last Friday both games were live from Suncorp weren't they?

Based on last nights figures, no more live Friday AFL on Seven. You had your chance Melbourne.

I was stunned with that result, I was sure Cats/Saints would go 1.1m

Like it has been said, the opportunity is there to watch it live and its not taken so why would Seven bother doing it anymore?

That result does seem excessively low for what was built up as a huge match. Even the crowd was a disappointing 58,000, though the horrible Melbourne weather was probably to blame for that.

Admittedly, the match, like most St Kilda matches, wasn't much of s spectacle, not to mention Geelong insipid effort post-half time

The A.F.L ratings were very poor last night for such a big match. If you compare them with the last blockbuster between Collingwood and Geelong a few weeks ago, there's been a huge drop off of at least 400,000 viewers. This would suggest that Collingwood is enormously popular,or that people simply don't like watching St Kilda play,or maybe a combination of both.

I think you're right with that. Collingwood certainly are enormously popular, and St Kilda's game style can be really bogged down and hard to watch at times

But would 410,000 Sydneysiders tune in to watch St George?
