Yes, an NBN/KO-NX alliance could potentially be one of the strongest in the country. The 'gap' to Prime7/Ten/2HD/NEW would become a yawning chasm - or should that be a massive abyss? :-)

so for Conroy banging on about diversity all he's doing is breeding more anti-competitiveness by creating monoliths that rivals can't match

I think that if the govt gets rid of the 75% reach rule they should demand a minimum half hour of local news in each aggregated market....sub markets might be stretching it a bit.

Damn straight.

I guess regardless of whether NBN or NRN is sold off, whatever licence is retained will be absorbed into the SC play out centre in Canberra (which is already the case with NRN) under the banner of 'Southern Cross Nine'. Retaining the NBN licence could still make sense in that it could be retained as the news bulletin hub for Northern NSW (as it is now) and local SCA radio stations KOFM and NXFM would probably relocate to the NBN studios and the same journalists would do reports for both TV and radio.

Makes sense. Would they do it though? That's the $64,000 Question...

There is no space at NBN for the radio stations, although they could do with a good refurbishment (both TV and radio). They could definitely use both David Dollin and Amy Goggins for their NBN News reports, considering NBN is very understaffed at the moment in the local journalist area.

Are TPG still there in the old Soul/SPT offices?

NBN and Southern Cross Austereo Newcastle would be a very powerful ad spend for any company wanting broad reach.

Aside from reuniting NBN and (2)KO...I can see everyone else kicking up a stink about the clout an NBN/KO/NX tie-up would have. They are the No. 1 stations in their mediums in the market, albeit thanks to the lack of competition from their rivals.  The ACCC may have something to say about that. Although, they may just rollover to satisfy the TV networks like other government organisations already do.

I don't think there's much the ACCC can do, although finding us (the Swamp) a new owner would be (cough) BRILLIANT.

Southern Cross readies for Nine deal

SOUTHERN Cross Media held an emergency board meeting yesterday about a possible $4 billion merger with Nine Entertainment Co, as Communications Minister Stephen Conroy prepared to put to cabinet revolutionary rule changes that would herald a shake-up of the media map. The Southern Cross board may release a statement on the Australian Securities Exchange as early as this morning,

If Southern Cross were to replace WIN as Nine's regional affiliate, WIN could be forced to do business with Ten. But if a merger of Nine and Southern Cross proceeds, Nine could keep supplying programming to WIN stations in Adelaide and Perth.

Nine's hand is strengthened by being able to supply other television licence-holders, such as SBS.

The biggest victim if Nine and Southern Cross combined would be billionaire Bruce Gordon's Wollongong-based WIN Corporation, owner of Nine's Perth and Adelaide stations, which could be left out in the cold.

A Nine/Southern Cross tie-up could halve WIN's profits if it joined forces with Ten, due to Ten's poor ratings, a deep source of concern for Southern Cross.

WIN is in a tight spot as Nine pushes to generate bigger revenues after a huge investment in content and lifting ratings. Nine pushed the boat out last year, signing big cheques for hit shows such as The Voice, and paying a record $1.1bn for the rights to show NRL games.

There is a lot of similar discussion taking place in two threads (this one and the Southern Cross Ten).  Would it not be wise to split off this merger conversation and create a topic within the General Television Topics Forum?
