The first Newcastle radio ratings of the year have been released.

NX is again the #1 station with 18.9%, with sister station KO not far behind with 17.6%. JJJ came 3rd with 10.7%, while ABC 1233 rated 10.6%. 2HD slumped by 2.7% from the previous survey to rate below the 10% mark with a 9.4% share, only 0.6% ahead of sister station, New FM, who went up by 1.1% from the previous survey.

In the 25-39 age group, there's a strong competition between NX & JJJ, with the two rating only 4.2% within each other (it was a 13.1% gap between the two in the previous survey). ABC 1233 took over the #1 spot for the 65+ age group, which rated 25% in contrast to 2HD's 23.5% (down 7.2% from the previous survey).

In breakfast, NX's Steve & Kim won the battle with a 19.9%, while KO's David & Tanya rated 18.6%. In mornings, John Laws went down from 19.7% in the previous survey (in which he won his timeslot) to 14.4%, therefore placing him in 3rd place (KO won the timeslot). JJJ outrated 1233 from 9am to 7pm on weekdays. KO is #1 on weekends.

Have a look at 2HD's figures for 12pm-4pm Weekdays and Drive (Talkin Rubbish)....geez. New FM have better results at night and they're not even in the main game these days. New FM have not been able to rate in double figures since Allan Cameron left Sandgate in 2005. They still can't even rate a 9% overall. Just a complete waste of time. Of course I was straight on the email bowing down to the new king and begging for a pardon after the bagging out I've been giving him for the past 6 or so years....

Calculating the Newcastle ratings through my spreadsheet, I've noticed an extremely high 'Other Stations' figures, particularly in the 55-64 & 65+ age groups. In the 55-64 age group, the 'Other Stations' account for 34.5% of the demographic, easily eclipsing KO's 19.3% share, while in the 65+ age group, they account for 30.9% of the demographic, outrating ABC1233's 25% & 2HD's 23.5%.

What this says to me is that 2NUR, which I regard as the "quiet achiever" in the Newcastle radio market, is a very popular station on among the over-55s. Considering that the station would account for a large slice of the 'Other Stations' ratings, 2NUR would've easily been the #1 station in the 55-64s, and is probably rating competitively with 1233 & 2HD in the 65+.

Well now it's official I'm a has-been. I've been working on that title for many years and it seems I have achieved it. Something to hang my microphone on maybe. Well at least I'm a good bloke and what's that "a bloody good jock". I am happy to be has-been anyday if that's the case.

Hey Pete,

I wouldn't say you're a has-been, in my opinion, it's more a case of others on the other stations are never-was & never-will-be's.
As far as I'm concerned, 2NUR is Newcastle radio, there's plenty more that should still be on air in Newcastle but aren't, only because they haven't been supported by, or have been shafted by some employers. It's a shame John McGahen has retired, he was/is the best GM radio has seen (Newcastle radio in particular), he knew talent & looked after them, (he's another point in case, Austereo, cough).
2NUR deserves all the credit it gets, despite being a community station, it's really the only station interested in the Newcastle community & giving them good radio.

LOL, you knew I was taking the piss - "commercial radio has-been" because when you go to 2NUR, you don't go backwards to the commercials ever again.

Ask Cochrane some of the names I give him... he's had to put up with me since 1996 when we first met at 2NM.

Still find it intriguing that NX-FM is still on top. As I've stated I stopped listening cause I go sick of the repetition. If I want repetition I'll go back to my mp3 Player. It's at least repetition I have control over.

Wouldn't surprise if 2NUR-FM is where the majority of the "Other Stations" figures are coming from. Also as far as I know it's also the only independantly owned station in Newcastle as well.

Yes, but I'm guessing that it wouldn't represent towards the 'Other Stations' ratings as much as that of 2NUR. Having said that, Star 104.5 would've attracted quite a following in Newcastle, particularly in the Lake Macquarie area, where the Central Coast stations come in almost as strongly as the local Newcastle stations. Likewise for 2NM & Power FM in the Cessnock/Maitland area.
