ABC is trailing a slideshow-style highlights box on the front page.

Looks quite nice.

And now they have started using again except it is just for news.

Ah, so that's what you meant. Wow, it certainly looks nice. Very, very functional.

It looks Flash-like, but I don't think it is. Does anyone know how it works?

You're right that it's not flash, it's javascript.

They have also added a news box below the rotating headlines box.

I use the ABC news website as my homepage. It's easy to navigate and user friendly. Their news is always reliable too.

The new expanded news site, including a massive increase in video content, will be launched in December.

Sounds fantastic.

I have to say, the ABC homepage is much better than the BBC's. It is kind of surprising, given the BBC has about ten times more resources thrown at it, but then I suppose it does get a fair bit of traffic; although I have the feeling a new one isn't far away, after the reboot competition.

ABC's news box at the top of the page has a bug. If there is two world stories (for example, as that is the case at the time of posting), it shows both as selected, although only one is selected.

EDIT: Now 403.

To me, it looks like a major server fault and the Apache config has gone crazy, or the server has lost it's permissions information (which is why pages are coming up as forbidden, even the error page).

Some of the news links are still working (eg. http://abc.net.au/ne...02/1844000.htm) but the content is a bit mucked up (eg. the local news content is showing errors etc.).

australianetwork.com is also down.

EDIT: Some sections seem to be working still or are coming back online. The site is running quite slow and seems to be going offline sometimes. No ABC.net.au is undergoing maintenance message either.

EDIT 2: Some sections work only if you go to abc.net.au or www.abc.net.au - Australia Network's site seems to be back.

Or maybe they're just revamping the homepage...

If they were, they would just put their 'ABC online is undergoing maintaince' message.

This is an apparent server/s issue that is even effecting ABC Shop, Triple J, other ABC.net.au pages and even the message boards.

Just in case anyone is interested, the new ABC News Online will launch by mid April.

It is supposed to launch at the start of April, but that seems unlikely now.

But without a doubt by the end of April!!!

It looks fantastic!!!

From the News idents they've been running, it does look a bit better than some of the earlier things I saw. I'll be interested to see how things turn out.
