[attachmentid=undefined]I hope I'm not breaking the froum rules by posting this capture, hopefully someone will put me straight if I am.

This is vary much a rarity these days on a channel that was built on its regional structure. The use of the regional varient of the ITV1 ident along with the regional station name being used and the regional programme announced by the continuity announcer. This is a regional opt out from 7.30pm Tuesday 23 Aug.

The use of the standard ident and continuity from London with no mention of the following programme has become the norm for regional opts in the last couple of years, so was surprised to see this.

I'd started a thread on UK Television, so feel free to ask me any questions that you may have about UK TV.

Here is a regional ident on a channel called ITV1 for a regional programme in the Meridian region.

The ITV1 Break Bumper - The Bill playing into a break.

Prior to Granada and Carlton taking over the network, each region had its own break bumper. Ranging from the truly wierd to the not quite so wonderful. This is now the standard BB in all English regions.

(During the day ITV1 calls itself ITV DAY and the breakfast service is provided by GMTV - each have thier own break bumpers, which I'll try and capture and post)

http://www.themocksf...umperBumper.ram

Channel Five Break/Ad Bumper-

Five go into a break in the same way as ITV, but also use the bumper between ads.

http://www.themocksf...IVEAdBumper.ram

Each clip has a bit left in either side of the graphic - or you will blink and miss the bumpers!

I can't quite work out why ITV1 do this, as they are always pleading poverty. This break during a regional current affairs programme is entirely promos. Two for networked shows and one for a regional documentary "Crimefighters".

This isn't a one off but is a common occurence.

Regionals have fairly good viewing figures so it seems like wasted opportunity to me.

Sorry about the quality, I lowered it to speed up downloads.

Those local ITV1 idents are rare down here in the south. The 5 and a half months I've been here in the UK, i've only ever seen that Meridian ident used once. It may just be each region playing them out differently though. My mate is News Editior for BBC Look North Hull so when i've been up there to see him, i've noticed that Yorkshire play their local ident a bit more.

ITV and channel 4 annoy me a bit with the program sponsor tags at the start and end of each ad break as well as before and after the program. It's particularly annoying during The Bill with those sponsor tags. It's better in australia having the sponsor billboards either at the start and end of the program or in the first and last ad breaks..

Actually Desperate Housewives had like 4 sponsor billboards within the show. But i wouldn't be too fussed, you get a very long indication of an adbreak so just change the channel. Make the best out of the situation biggrin.gif

That's interesting to know.

What may play a part in this, is that continuity for the southern regions comes from the LWT studios in London and for the northern regions from the Yorkshire TV studios in Leeds.

Regional continuity is pre-recorded by the continuity teams and I think just played out by the region over the national continuity. It could be the simple fact that the Leeds team has been more active at pre-recording for thier regions than the London team.

Possibly, or I could just be watching Meridian at the wrong time and missing local idents haha.

Well ITV do show regional adverts but during national programming, maybe ITV do this to stop annoying the viewer? mellow.gif

It's billboard overkill here. Before a program starts, going in to every ad break, coming out of every ad break and thn at the end of the show.

One thing I kinda miss a bit is the PRG's back home. The only channel here that I've seen use them is abc1. Everytime i watch Desperate Housewives or CSI, i keep expecting to see a PRG pop up. No real need for them here though I guess as the program name usually appears on a break bumper or a sponsor billboard when returning from the ad breaks.

Thats correct, but Yorkshire Television do the Transmission to Yorkshire TV, Granada, Central, Border, Tyne Tees, even the weather forecasts for that region come from YTV (except TTTV they sometimes use Jon Mitchell from YTV)

The London Studios (the former LWT Studios but now mainly used by Granada) does Transmission to Westcountry, ITV Wales (HTV Wales), ITV West (HTV West), Meridian, Anglia, ITV London (LWT/Carlton) they also provide the main feed to YTV to do the Northern Transmission as said above by YTV, also they give the clean feed to UTV, Channel Television, and SMG (Grampian, Scottish TV).

All announcements are done in London for ITV PLC owned regions, and sent to YTV for the northern regions to be played out (Granada, YTV, Border, TTTV) and the regions that London plays out.

SMG, UTV, Channel* do their own thing with the announcements and continuity, promos etc..

*Since Channel is a small but independent region, they take the national feed with it saying ITV1 but they opted out for local programming with Channel TV Idents.

Is thiis slightly clear Big_Dan?

So there is one team of announcers, pre-recorded in London, and sent to YTV in Yorkshire and played out from there for the Northern Regions? That's how I read your post...

And thats correct, and Regions played out by London, Eg: Anglia, Westcountry, Meridian, ITV (HTV) West and Wales, the announcements and local idents are also played out by London.

Changing channels.........................

From I have seen on here it seems regional news in Australia isn't particularly well covered, this is how BBC One do it.

First clip is for the Six O'Clock news, including the BBC ONE South East ident and the cut to South East Today for the regional headlines, once the national headlines have been given.

http://www.themocksf...tin/BBCNews.ram

South East Today headlines and titles coming out of the Six O'Clock News. Very simple graphics, but effective none the less. Sadly this clip is from a different night as I pressed the wrong button!

http://www.themocksf...thEastToday.ram

Each programme runs for half an hour.

ITV1 do it the other way around, Regional, then National.

I really love the way that the BBC National and Regional News bulletins transition seamlessly between one another. It's so weel organised how it;s all done.

That's how Seven News and Today Tonight should do it.
