Well that actually depends. I translucent watermark won't actually burn in because the color of it changes with the show.
A proper bug like on Sky News or CNN will be much worse. Or that active thing on FOXTEL that doesn't ever switch off..... eek.gif

What annoys me about watermarks (well 7 at least, not sure about 9) is that digital viewers get an even bigger watermark. I can't actually see the point of them at all on digital as the TV knows the name of the channel.

Actually seeing the HD sisplay in an electronics store nines watermark is very clear, its different from that of the analogue one which is barely visible. It's about as visible as the CBS bug and looks embossed.

Big Dan's Opinion and Golden Laws In His Own Personal Opinion On Watermarks

1 - All watermarks should be small and unintrusive
2 - Watermarks shall not animate during the program
3 - Watermarks should be as close to transparent or dark grey/white as possible
4 - Watermarks should not cover any other watermarks

Actually...if they're done right, position shouldn't be a problem. Prime's is located in the top-right hand corner of the screen...and I believe IMHO it's Australia's best watermark. Simple and uninstrusive.

But IMO with the exception of sport all watermarks should be on the bottom right as you instinctively look up, peoples faces are on the top half of the screen for example.

The reason why sports watermarks are on the top is to ensure when it is used on various news broadcasts that it doesn't interfere with the supers and remains entirely visible.

I gave Prime as an example because it's how a watermark should be, if you are going to have one. I usually never notice it, unless its something like Sunrise where visual information is all over the place.

Why have watermarks at all?? I love Channel 9 because it doesnt have these annoying watermarks.

I tend to agree, but they're been seen by the networks as a "must-have" these days, including Channel 9, so if you're going to do it, you've got to do it right.

Channel Nine Perth do not insert a shytemark. Some network news programming has the shytemark inserted at a network level meaning all stations will see it.

Another problem introduced by shytemarks besides the burn in is they put extra load on the MPEG encoders used for digital encoding. There are no benefits of a shytemark but plenty of drawbacks.

One thing I want to know from the pro watermarkers. You say you can't notice them.

So what exactly is the point of having them then?

I'm not pro-watermark. I'm just saying that if you need to have them, you should do it properly.

Quite true.

Even though the current one is a bit big and poorly designed, at least it isn't a gold logo that is on screen all the time in the program. Of course, when the WIN Australia watermark appeared, it was multi-colours and 3D.

Prime's the closest to a good watermark but it still doesn't hit the mark.

If it more transparent than it is now, I think it would be the 'ideal' watermark, even though none would be better.

cheerful.gif If win got rid of that map of australia it would look a lot better don't you agree?
Maybe put the dots back on it and just have a clear watermark!

If WIN just went with a simple watermark of their logo, then yes, I agree with you. yes.gif
