Bath back in the dating gameDecember 21, 2008 - 12:16PM

Separated: Denis Canahan and Chris Bath.
CHANNEL Seven newsreader Chris Bath has split from her partner, music composer Denis Carnahan, the father of her eight-year-old son, Darcy.

Yesterday Bath, 41, said the "amicable" split happened several months ago and that she had recently begun dating Channel Seven sports reporter Jim Wilson.

"It's early days yet - lunch and dinner - I can't tell you what's going to happen with that," she said.

"Denis and I have been de facto partners and best friends for 10 years. We decided to split much earlier this year and have not even told many of our friends about it yet. This will come as a surprise to some people in the Channel Seven newsroom.

"We wanted to manage it ourselves and have not involved lawyers. Our son has been the priority. Denis did not move out until our son was sure we would remain friends.

"I don't want to go into the reasons. It's very personal and private and I don't want to be that disrespectful to Denis or myself by discussing it in public."

Bath has just signed a long-term contract with Seven and her popularity has soared since her sizzling performances on Dancing With The Stars.

"Channel Seven has been very supportive through this," she said.

Carnahan has his music studio in the basement of Bath's North Shore house and continues to see their son almost daily.

"There is no one else involved," Carnahan said yesterday, adding that he and Bath began talking about "niggling" issues in the relationship eight months ago.

He said: "We caught it early enough [so that the break-up was amicable]. We are proud and pleased with the way we have done it, but we are not proud and pleased it has happened.

"Chris and I are still very close friends and talk on the phone several times a day."

He said he had not been seeing anyone else since moving out of the family home.

Carnahan said he had known Wilson for most of the 12 years Bath had been at the network and was aware of their recent dates.

Wilson split from his wife, Jackie, mother of his sons, aged five and seven, two to three months ago.

He confirmed he had been on a couple of dates with the star newsreader.

"We have both been through similar experiences in the last 12 months. We have had a couple of dates but it's early days. It's a wait and see what happens," he said.

In reply to Tiger Flyer, I agree about her high pants. It's not a great look for Bathy. They've given her a harder appearance tonight for the serious subjects they dealt with, but they'd still be better off loosening up her hair and letting it flow - and by putting her in a dress.

Maybe I've been away from Australia for too long... but to me, in that youtube clip, her Australian accent comes across MUCH stronger when she's talking casually than when she's reading the news. I guess most newsreaders have some sort of "reading voice" but her accent seems to be much milder on-air.

Very good interview with Chris Bath in today's Sunday Life magazine in The Sun-Herald. Good insight into how she struggled and coped with a young child while trying to maintain her career. She certainly did the hard yards to get where she is today.

Is this where 7news was this time last year when Cricket & Tennis were on? Is Chrissy okay or are people just making excuses for her? I can't wait for the ratings year to begin, i'll be watching this battle closely.
