I read in The Advertiser this morning that many plasma screen owners are very unhappy with Nine and Seven because their static watermarks on the cricket and Aus Open are burning into their TVs.

TV logos make their mark
January 23:
TELEVISION cricket and tennis coverage is making a lasting impression on plasma screens.
The logos used by Channel 7 and Channel 9 during long days of sporting action are burning themselves into the delicate digital monitors.
With the hi-tech TVs costing thousands of dollars, some owners have threatened legal action saying their screens have been ruined.
Viewer Wayne Spiers says he bought a $3000 plasma screen on Christmas Eve. It now bears Nine's logo in the right-hand corner, a legacy of the Boxing Day test, which his family watched on and off for five days.
It was matched by a Channel 7 logo last week, which appeared after one day of watching tennis.
Mr Spiers, of Melbourne, said: "It was silly of me to assume Channel 7 and 9 would care enough about their viewers to ensure their logos wouldn't damage our TVs."
Screen burn occurs when onscreen graphics - displayed in one spot for a long time - become seared into the plasma.
A ghost image then lingers on other programs, even on rival stations.
Stations can avoid the damage by using a watermarked logo, in a transparent shape that adopts the colours on screen.
A Seven spokesperson said: "Turning down the contrast on your picture will reduce the problem."
A Channel 9 spokesman would not comment.

BTW, of course it would appear on rival stations once its burned in, its not gonna change to another burned watermark. Does this happen with the win opaque mark

I dont think the litigent has a foot to stand on. Because most if not all TV manuals warn you about the burn in effect and that no one should leave there tv on long enough for it to occur.
Yes i know that seems rather ridiculous but thats how these plasma's and LCD's work.

They probably should make it less solid, they know people want to watch these on their high def displays. Go CRTs

I have mine on a slight orbit, so it rotates the image a few pixels in a different direction every few minutes... you can also invert the image if something burns in on a static image (like DVD menu) but although I have picked up the odd burn here and there, they have all faded quite quickly, and were never very severe...
i simply dont watch extended sport coverage...

the other night i was watching WIN and the watermark stayed on after a show had finished and continued to stay on until about 5 seconds into the late news

is it a sign that WIN has sent their watermark to rockhampton for 'personal use'

They were probably timing it only for a 30 or 45second Promo, and didn't realise that this one would go for the whole 90 seconds.. :sarcastic:

CRTs are prone to burn in too.
Short of watermarks being banned, the only other solution is to use a video processor that can remove or significantly reduce the appearance of the shytemark. A PC is probbaly the cheapest and easiest way to do this but there are drawbacks.
In short, stations should follow NBN Newcastle and Nine Perth and simply not put display shytemarks.

It isn't the only programme - I've noticed that the ABC has missed out on the watermark for the past couple of weeks for the news. I also like how
7news doesn't have the watermark at all, except for exclusive stories. I truly hate the 'exclusive' watermark for
Ten News. I stand corrected - it isn't a watermark, it's a non-transparent logo, and God, it annoys me.

A easy soultion to watermarks, make them really transparent to the point it's visible at one point and bearly visible the next, they can be useful especially in the USA with all these affilates.

The USA watermarks aren't even watermarks! They're just logos stuck on the screen. They might as well sell the TVs with the logos painted on already. Every time I watch
The News Hour With Jim Lehrer, I get concerned about the VOA logo and whether or not it will burn in...
I think the best watermark at the moment is the new Nine one, followed by Prime, probably, then Ten. The ABC News and Current Affairs one (on
ABC News,
The 7.30 Report and
National Press Club Address) which has been made smaller to fit the supers, is a nice size. I think the standard ABC one is just too big and faint - big and faint don't mix.

That's right - I'd forgotten about The WB. They're not so bad. The real culprits are networks like CNN (I've not seen one bit of it without the
logo in the corner) and Voice of America (the logo pops up whenever it feels like it).
I noticed the other day, when flicking the channels and catching a bit of the netball on the ABC, that the ABC's sport watermark has changed to the new thin tube (see my avatar) by itself as the watermark.
