ACCC probes Rural Press buy of Riverina

Aug 15

The Australian competition watchdog is seeking market comment on the proposed acquisition of Riverina Media Group by Fairfax Media Ltd and Rural Press.

Rural Press bought the Riverina Media Group on May 2, while Fairfax got control of Rural Press on May 9, but the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it was not informed of the buy until after it was announced publicly.

“Parties proposing to undertake a merger or acquisition are strongly encouraged to approach the ACCC when a merger is contemplated and certainly before a merger is completed, particularly if the merger or acquisition could affect competition,” ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said.

The ACCC is inviting submissions from the market until August 30 and expects to make a final decision by September 21. More details can be found here.
