American-born entertainer Don Lane has passed away at a Sydney nursing home today, aged 75.
Lane began his career as a singer in Hawaii, before coming to Australia to work in the media. He is best known for his work with fellow entertainer Bert Newton as host of The Don Lane Show, which aired on the Nine Network from 1975 to 1983.
During his career, Lane won a total of 15 Logies, and was once the highest paid man on Australian television.
Lane had been battling dementia since being diagnosed in 2005, and had not been seen in public for some time.
A private funeral will be held on Friday, with details of a proposed public memorial not yet available.
Current CEO of Nine, David Gyngall paid tribute to Lane in a media statement this afternoon
“Today Australia lost one of its finest all-round entertainers.
Don Lane was a stalwart of the industry and a great mate to so many of us here at Nine.
While Don may have passed, the memories and the laughs he provided will remain with us for many years to come.
Our deepest condolences are conveyed to Jayne Ambrose, PJ and Don’s extended family.”
