Every Australian home to gain access to Freeview suite

Jan 05

All Australian households will have access to the Freeview suite, the Federal Government announced today.

As part of its push toward digital television, the government has vowed to provide Australians with the full range of services regardless of where they live, AAP reports.   To achieve this, the Government will fund and build a new digital satellite service as well as subsidise installations for remote residents, while broadcasters will fund the conversion of over 100 self-help transmitters.

It means all Australians will be able to access all 16 available channels.

“Under these measures, all regional Australians will now receive the same television services as people in the cities,” Communications Minister Stephen Conroy told reporters on Tuesday.

“This is a fantastic outcome for people in regional Australia, many of whom are in blackspot areas and have received limited television services for many years.”

Two self-help transmitters in the Mildura area will be the first to be converted prior to switchover in that region by June 30th.   The remaining transmitters to be converted prior to the switchover in each region will be announced later this year.
