SMH hits the iPad app store
Jul 20
The long awaited iPad application for The Sydney Morning Herald has hit the App Store only to receive poor reviews.
The app, based on the existing app Press Reader from NewspaperDirect allows users to download an electronic rendition of each days paper, but has been panned in many of the reviews with many looking for more interactivity.
Not long after Fairfax Media announced that the paper would gain its own app, iPad users of Press Reader in NSW have been unable to purchase and download the paper.
Update 21/7/2010 – A representative from The Sydney Morning Herald has clarified that:
- This first app is an electronic replica of the newspaper, as stated in the app store description
- Later this year, an interactive SMH app will be launched. This will be a new digital publication, developed from scratch.
- PressReader made the SMH available without authorisation and subsequently removed the paper after being alerted to the breach.
The Spy Report will review this and the Press Reader application later this week
